| History of SWT |
| Since fall 1991 there is a software engineering group
in the department of computer science of the University of Hamburg. It
stands for an application- and human-oriented approach. It is primarily
concerned with design and construction, use and further development of
interactive software supporting qualified work in industry and administration.
The central concern is to develop high-quality software
that can be used to provide technical and methodical support for work processes
in a way that is adequate for practice, comprehensible and ergonomical.
The group's assumption is that this can only be assured by taking a wider
look at the organisational and social embedment of software systems in
their application context.
So far the approach has been elaborated and proven in
practice primarily for application systems in the service and administration
sector. |
| Research Interests |
In the context of the development of interactive application
software the software engineering group is working on the following topics:
concepts, methods and tools of software development;
evolutionary system development and prototyping;
project models and forms of organisation for participative
software development;
object-oriented analysis and design;
use of hypermedia systems to support software development.

| Expertise of the Group |
The collegial leadership of the software engineering
group has a proven record of scientific and application-oriented publications
in the research areas mentioned. In addition there has been extensive seminar
and training activity in industry. The group members complement the thematic
spectrum with a broad expertise. The group's expertise is rounded off by
scientific accompaniment of industrial projects. Fanned out according to
the abovementioned research topics this means:
Evolutionary System Development and Prototyping
foundational conceptual work in international
publications and books; initiation and organisation of the first European
conference on prototyping; studies, project accompaniments and seminars;
development of a cyclical project model as well as supporting tools
Participative System Development
elaboration and application of concepts of communication
and cooperation in software development; conception and realization of
a successful practical project down to use; theoretical and practice-oriented
publications
Methods of Software Development
development and application of own methods as
well as investigation and evaluation of methods relevant to practice; manifold
experience with the application of methods in projects; publications about
concepts, methods and project experiences in software engineering and software
ergonomics; seminars and training
Object-oriented System Development
many years of research and development work with
relevant publications; application of the own concepts in industrial projects;
technology transfer in seminar series and expert opinions
Epistemological Foundation and Ethical Reflection
articles, talks and a foundational book publication;
initiation and organisation of an international conference on philosophical
and epistemological issues in software engineering

| Software Technology Center
(STC) |
The STC as part of the HITeC
initiative of the Computer Science Department serves as a platform for
technology transfer in the Hamburg area. On a regular basis we conduct
seminars about current topics in software engineering in general and about
topics of our particular research interest. Themes include (but are not
limited) to:
-
Management of object-oriented projects,
-
The role of framework-technology in software development,
and
-
Internet technology
What is more, the STC can serve as partner for your efforts
especially in the domain of object-oriented software development. Our staff
consists of highly professional and experienced consultants whose expertise
ranges from programming language skills to evaluating object-oriented architectures.
