Personal History

Bernd Page was born and raised in the German capital Berlin where he also went to school and received a university education. He was awarded a degree at the Technische Universität Berlin (Diploma in Civil Engineering with basic studies in Economic Science) and at the Stanford University (Master of Science in Industrial Engineering with special emphasis on computing). He was awarded a Ph.D. degree in Applied Informatics and the university teaching qualification  for System Analysis at TU Berlin. After leaving his post as scientific assistant and assistant lecturer at the TU Berlin, he became scientific council at the Federal Environment Agency where he contributed to the establishment of the environmental information system UMPLIS with emphasis on databases for air and environmental chemicals. Since the mid-eighties he has been acting as professor for applied informatics at the University of Hamburg with main research interest in simulation technology and environmental information systems.

Prof. Page was one of the initiators of the Technical Committee “Environmental Informatics” in the German Informatics Association (GI) and since then has regularily contributed to its activities (several years as speaker and vice-speaker and since then on the supervising body). He also supported the annual EnviroInfo conferences, which have been started on the national level and are now organized more recently more and more on an international scale.

Prof. Page has worked for a number of  industrial and public cooperation partners as well as on grants of sponsoring institutions on a wide scale of externally funded applied research projects on simulation technology as well as environmental informatics.

Prof. Page is one of the founders and associates of the environmental software company ifu – Institut für Umweltinformatik Hamburg GmbH – a spin-off of the Department of Informatics. The company is engaged in designing software products and consulting services in the environmental sector.

Since 2002 he has been a member of the executive board of HiTec e.V. which has been established many years ago as a technology transfer agent for the Dept. of Informatics at the University of Hamburg. It aims at the implementation of scientific methods in practice and is currently engaged in a large number of transfer projects. In this context Prof. Page has carried out different transfer projects on simulation tools with several companies.

Prof. Page has attracted attention as the author and editor of a number of specialist publications on environmental information systems and simulation technology (see selected publications). He is on the editorial board for the journal “Environmental Modelling and Software”. Prof. Page has regularily taken part in the international exchange programmes e.g. as guest scientist at the Alberta Research Council with a Faculty Research Grant from the Canadian government, many times in succession as guest professor at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch – New Zealand, most recently in 2004 and as guest professor at the Smith College, Massachussetts – USA (winter semester 2001). He has been invited to the Department of Computer Science at Stellenbosch University, South Africe twice, which runs a partnership program with the University of Hamburg.
Until recently he has participated as a temporary expert on a project of the GTZ (German Association for Technical Cooperation) on information systems for eco-efficiency for the Thai Department of Industrial Works (DIW) in Bangkok  (project scheduled for 2005-2007).
